One of you hides a word or short phrase and picks a category. The other guesses letters one at a time, every wrong guess draws another piece of the hangman, and six wrong guesses lose the round. Think you know it? Take a shot at the whole answer, but a wrong shot costs a guess. Then the roles swap. Solve it with fewer wrong guesses and you score more; play best of three sets (each set is one round each) and the first to win two sets takes the match.

How to play Hangman
One of you hides a word or short phrase (up to three words) and picks a category, such as animal, food or movie.
The other sees one blank per letter and guesses letters one at a time. A right letter fills in every place it appears.
Every wrong letter adds a piece to the drawing. Six wrong guesses and the round is lost.
Think you know it? Tap Solve and type the whole answer. A wrong answer counts as a wrong guess.
Then the roles swap. Solving the word scores 7 minus your wrong guesses, and getting hanged scores nothing.
A set is one round each way, and the player with more points in it wins the set. The match is best of three: win two sets to win.
If the sets end level, total points break the tie. Still level? It is a draw.

Tips to win
Start with the most common letters: E, A, R, I, O, T, N and S show up in most words.
Use the category and the number of blanks to rule words out before you guess.
As the setter, pick a word with rare letters (J, Q, X, Z, V) or a phrase with several short words.
Do not waste a guess on the full answer unless you are nearly sure.
How a match works
Open the game on your device and press play.
Get matched with someone straight away, or send a friend your private room link and wait for them to join.
You take turns; each move appears on the other screen as soon as the server accepts it. A match takes about 5 minutes.
Lost your connection? Come back within a minute and the match carries on where it stopped.

Questions
Can I play Hangman online with a friend?
Yes. Open Hangman, choose to play a friend and send them the private room link, they open it on their own phone or computer and the match starts when you are both ready. You can also invite a player by username, or take a quick match against whoever is waiting.
Is Hangman free, and do I need an account?
It is free, with no download and no account needed: press play and you join as a guest. Create an account later if you want to keep your match history and earn a rating on the leaderboard.
Can I use more than one word?
Yes, up to three words separated by spaces, 16 characters at most. Spaces are shown from the start, so only the letters are hidden.
Can my rival see my word?
No. The word stays on the server and your rival only sees the blanks you have left until the round ends.
What happens if I take too long to pick a word or a letter?
Each move has a turn timer. If it runs out the match is awarded to your rival, so keep an eye on the clock.
